The Trojan War, by Olivia Coolidge, is a retelling of
events which are described in Homer's Iliad and Odyssey
and in other classic pieces of early Greek literature. Many
historians and archeologists agree that there might have been
a war between early Achaeans and the residents of what is now
the town of Hisarlik in Turkey. In 1871, Heinrich Schliemann
followed many clues and excavated Hisarlik. He believed he had
found the city of Troy. Unfortunately, in the process of digging
up the city he destroyed most of the clues to its identity which
later archeologists would like to investigate.
The story is complicated. The basic story revolves around a
ten-year siege by Greeks of the city of Troy, or Ilium. The
Greek gods play a part in the story, as do many well-known heroes.
