Unit Review

For the test, you should be able to:

1. Give the definitions of these vocabulary words:

2. Describe a neuron, and tell the main parts of the nervous system.

3. Know the three parts of the brain and the main jobs of each part.

4. Explain the difference between sensory and motor cells.

5. Give an example of a reflex and explain how it works.

6. Describe the endocrine system and explain what a hormone does.

7. Give two examples of glands, telling where they are in the body and what hormone each one releases.

8. Explain how to use medicines properly.

9. Describe two types of abused drugs and their effects on the body, giving an example for each which is legal and an example for each which is illegal.

10. Be prepared to write a paragraph answering either of these two questions:
a.  The body is very complex. When people take medicines, there are side effects. "Herbal" medicines are not supposed to be medicines at all. However, many people use them as if they were medicines, and they do often contain substances which act as drugs. Do you think "herbal" medicines should be controlled more carefully by the government? In your answer, you should give reasons and examples, both for your opinion and for why people might disagree with you.
b.  Compare the nervous system and the endocrine system. Explain why they are important for your body. Explain two ways they are different and two ways they are alike, and explain how drugs can affect the balance of these systems.

11. In addition, you should review the "stretch" notes in your journal. One five-point question on the test is always from this information.
