For the unit test, you should:
1. Give the definitions of these vocabulary words:
2. List the basic steps of the scientific method, and give an example of how they might be used.
3. Explain the differences between a mixture, a compound, and an element.
4. Describe the structure of an atom and its parts, and give the charge of each part.
5. Explain how elements and atoms are related, and explain how an atom of one element is different from an atom of another element.
6. Show you understand the rules for writing chemical symbols and chemical formulas. If you are given a formula, you should be able to say how many different types of atoms are in a molecule and how many atoms there all in all.
7. Be familiar with the Periodic Table of the Elements and be able to get information from it such as the name of an element, its symbol, and its atomic number.
8. Tell the difference between a physical change and a chemical change, and show you know why a change of state is not a chemical change.
9. If you read a description of a change, explain why you believe it to be a physical change or a chemical change.
There is no essay question on this test, just short answers.
Here's a hint: I have some Internet links which can help you review at Quia:
At http://www.quia.com/jg/234002.html there are concentration games, matching games, and even flashcards.
Or, even more fun, do the Jeopardy-like Chemistry Challenge at http://www.quia.com/cb/20771.html
In addition, you should review the "stretch" notes in your journal. One five-point question on the test is always from this information.
