Invertebrate Review

For the unit test, you should:

1. Give the definitions of these vocabulary words:

2. Name the two main groups of the animal kingdom (invertebrate and vertebrate).

3. Explain why scientists classify living things into groups. Know that scientists use categories of classification (kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, genus, species).

4. List the traits of the phyla in this unit, the main groups in each, and give an example of an animal that is in each phylum. For instance, for stinging-cell animals you should be able to give an example of a jellyfish or coral.

5. Tell what phylum a particular invertebrate belongs to. For instance, an insect belongs to the arthropods. An octopus belongs to the mollusks.

6. Compare and contrast two different phylums of animals, telling how they are similar and different, and explaining why scientists classify them into different groups.

7. Match the common names and the Latin names of the phylums we studied. For example, a stinging cell animal is a Cnidarian.

Consult the invertebrate rap (©2001 Chris D.) for help . . . yes, a fifth grader wrote it.

In addition, you should review the "stretch" notes in your journal. One five-point question on the test is always from this information.
