Unit Review

For the test, you should:

1.  Know the definitions of these vocabulary words:

• capsule

2.  Be familiar with Newton's Laws of Motion and why they were important for spaceflight

3.  List the problems which had to be solved before spaceflight was possible.

4.  If you are given a list of events from the time line of manned space flight, you should be able to put them in order.

5.  You should be able to name:

• the first man-made satellite in space
• the first human being in space
• the first United States citizen to go into space
• the first U.S. citizen to orbit the Earth
• the name of the person who made the first space-walk
• the names of the astronauts who died aboard Apollo 1
• the names of the astronauts aboard Apollo 11
• the first person to stand on the Moon
• the name of the first space shuttle
• the names of all the shuttles
• the importance of the Challenger disaster

6.  You should be able to discuss the "space race" between the U.S. and the U.S.S.R., telling the important events and the outcome of the race, comparing at least two pairs of American and Soviet missions, and discussing why it finished the way it did.

7.  You should be able to give reasons for and against manned space exploration and justify your own opinion about it.

8.  In addition, you should review the "stretch" notes in your journal. One five-point question on the test is always from this information.
